I’ll be honest, after two weeks of only writing about Marvel projects, I am trying my best to not do any writing about Marvel. This will undoubtedly change come Ant-Man’s release date in July, but until then I will remain strong in not writing about Marvel…in the meantime, what about OTHER SUPERHEROES?
Warner Bros have released the official synopsis for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (still a horrible title). Director Zack Snyder has kept this movie in public eye by releasing various teases and pictures over the past two years. The trailer was released a few months ago (Click here to read my thoughts on the trailer) and the conversation continues. The film isn’t being released till March 2016. Nine months until the release date and we have our first official synopsis of what the film will be about:
“Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.”
Yep, that’s pretty much what we thought a movie title Batman v Superman would be about.
V? Check (its still humorous that they didn’t just go with “vs,” opting for a “v” implying that this will be a court case between the two).
There’s nothing too newsworthy here, I just have a few thoughts to go along with the synopsis. One, I’m still on the hype train for this film. I’m on board with anything regarding Batman (why do you think I loved The Lego Movie so much). Though I hope the movie won’t be as dark as they are letting on, I am still optimistic for the film and can’t wait.
Two, they are really playing up the “savior” aspect of Superman. There was already a ton of Christ-like themes and images in Man of Steel and the Batman v Superman trailer shows the world treating him like a god. The synopsis calls Superman “Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior.” That may be a bit generous given the events of the first film, but that’s the starting point for the new film. I think it will be interesting to see a film explore this side of a superhero story. When a god-like creature shows up, this is one way the world would react.
Three, we can speculate and pretty much figure out the plot of the film. Batman responds to Superman’s actions of being a “god.” Batman and Superman fight. A new threat arises. Batman and Superman fight the new threat. Justice has dawned. Franchises have been started. Oh, and Wonder Woman shows up somewhere too.
*Possible Spoilers (?) Ahead* There has been speculation as to who the “threat” will be. Sources who have read the script are saying that it will be Doomsday. That makes sense. Doomsday is the type of villain that both Superman AND Batman can fight (i.e. a villain on earth who can be defeated with punching). While I am really looking forward to Jessie Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, I understand that we need a villain that can engage in some action scenes. **End of Spoilers Section**
So there you have it. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has an official synopsis and it is pretty much what you expected it to be. Though the online community is split on the trailer, I’m taking my stance as being optimistic for the film and I can’t wait for more Batman.
The film will be released on March 25, 2016.
